Hungarian Parliament

The Home of the Hungarian Parliament

This magnificent, iconic building was opened in 1902 after decades of construction. The home of the Hungarian parliament is one of Europe’s finest neo-gothic buildings and is a must-see for anyone visiting this beautiful city.

The most stunning part of the parliament is the Domed Hall, completed in 1896. The 16-sided dome is 96m high, similar in size to St Stephen’s Basilica. Each of the 16 pillars bares a statue of one of Hungary’s 16 Kings. It is a truly magnificent construction and not to be missed.

Other hi-lights in the parliament building include the Grand Staircase. This opulent entrance features a sweeping stairway with sumptuous ceiling frescos depicting poignant moments in Hungarian history. Don’t miss the Crown jewels collection made up of historic royal artefacts, many of which were spirited out of Hungary during the Second World War.

The Hungarian Parliament should be appreciated from both inside and outside. The best way to marvel at this stunning landmark is from across the Danube, on the Buda side of the city. The best way to see the hi-lights inside the parliament building is to join a tour when the parliament is not in session. This has to be at the top of any visitors sightseeing list.
