Chain Bridge

Bringing Budapest Together

Chain Bridge is an impressive suspension bridge spanning the River Danube, connecting the eastern and western sides of Budapest. Opening in 1849, Chain Bridge was the first permanent crossing between Buda and Pest and is now a popular tourist attraction for those to appreciate the magnificent structure.

Chain Bridge has become a significant icon of Budapest's cultural, social and economic history, linking Buda and Pest to form the metropolitan city it is today. Now a symbol of Hungarian liberty, the bridge was the location for demonstrators in 1989, protesting for independence. The remarkable structure was developed by William Clark, who previously designed the Hammersmith and Marlow suspension bridges. Extending 375m long and 16m wide, the bridge was decorated with cast iron lions at either end replicating the famous lions of Trafalgar Square.

The bridge offers fabulous panoramic views, including the Grandiose Parliament on the eastern side of the River Danube and Castle Hill towering above the Western side. Many of Budapest’s day and evening river cruises will allow you to appreciate the full spender of this great structure.

Chain Bridge hosts the popular Budapest Summer Festival from 27 June - 19th July. This event closes off the bridge to pedestrians only and the traffic is replaced with a parade of arts and craft workshops, food stalls and local art. The bridge comes alive with a fantastic atmosphere of colourful parades and dancing, reflecting Budapest's folklore. If visiting with the family, there are plenty of activitites to keep the children entertained, including face-painting and toy stalls. You can walk from the Danube Promenade through the festival and right up to Buda Castle while visitors can also enjoy wind orchestras, musical performances and evening jazz concerts.
