Dam Square
Dam Square is a vibrant and bustling square in the historical centre of Amsterdam. Surrounded by important and impressive buildings, Dam Square is often packed with tourists and locals alike, many of whom are there to enjoy the numerous attractions and events that take place in and around the square. No Amsterdam self-catering holiday would be complete without a visit to this lively central location.
Dam Square was, perhaps unsurprisingly, built upon a dam originally built in 1270. The dam was constructed on the Amstel River and, after the construction grew in size, it became large enough to accommodate a town square. The area began to take on an important governmental and commercial role, and many important buildings sprang up in this central location.
There are plenty of sights to see both in and around the square. Day and night, visitors staying in Amsterdam self-catering apartments are sure to find plenty of activity in Dam Square. You can take a seat at one of many restaurants, food stalls, cafes and bars and watch the world passing by or go browsing in trendy shops and department stores such as De Bijenkorf, Magna Plaza and Bonneterie. For big spenders (or happy browsers), the Amsterdam Diamond Centre is also located on the square. In summer, mimes and street performers take to the square to entertain and surprise the gathered crowds.
Dam Square is also a perfect destination for those looking for a more cultural Amsterdam self-catering experience. On the west side of the square sits the magnificent Royal Palace (Koninklijk Palace). Built in the 17th century, the Palace is no longer the home of the Dutch royal family, but it is still used in an official capacity. Beside the palace sit the famous Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum (open daily from 10:00am until 5:30pm) and the gothic-style Nieuwe Kerk (New Church).
On the opposite side of the square sits the National Monument, a white stone pillar erected in honour of the victims of World War II. Also worth a visit is the Beurs van Berlage building, an old stock exchange which now serves as a concert hall and exhibition space.
Dam Square is easily visited from Amsterdam self-catering apartments. From Central Station, walk about 700 meters south and you will find yourself in the square. Various streets end in the square including Nieuwendijk, Kalverstraat and Damstraat, making the square fairly easy to find from various parts of Amsterdam. Self-catering apartments are all within easy reach of public transport to Central Station.
