The Red Light District

An Area that is Guaranteed to Provoke Reaction

Famous throughout the world, Amsterdam’s Red Light District needs little introduction. This vibrant, historical and fascinating area of Amsterdam, set in one of the oldest districts of the city, has far more to see than just scantily-clad young ladies.

Amsterdam vacation rentals provide great bases for exploring all that the city has to offer. And no trip to Amsterdam would be complete without strolling through the Red Light District at least once. The Rossebuurt, as locals know it, is certainly rich in history. The buildings in this part of Amsterdam, as well as the traditional activities of its workers, date back to the 14th century. Newly arrived sailors would often visit this district in search of some company after slightly too many days at sea.

Thanks to Amsterdam’s liberal and tolerant nature, the Red Light District has flourished over the centuries and has now become one of the city’s main tourist attractions. Each year, millions of curious visitors take a walk through these historic cobbled streets. For those staying in Amsterdam vacation rentals, a stroll through the district is sure to provide a unique experience.

The streets are lined with the iconic red fluorescent windows behind which women of all nationalities offer their services. Amongst these lie a whole host of other establishments: traditional brothels, intriguing (and amusing) sex shops, gay bars, cinemas, trendy restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, hotels and a variety of different museums. If looking for some interesting souvenirs, be sure to visit the Het Gulden Vlies condom shop!

Getting to the Red Light District is simple. From any Amsterdam vacation rentals, head to the Central Station; the district is located nearby, approximately 10 minutes south of the station by foot. There is no need to feel uneasy when entering the area - you will soon notice plenty of other tourists happily strolling along and taking in the atmosphere.

The best time to visit the Red Light District is at night. The area comes to life at around 11.00pm when the crowds are walking the streets and the atmosphere is at its fullest. Business hours generally end between 2.00am and 3.00am, after which the area becomes quite quiet.

Amsterdam vacation rentals are perfect for exploring all that Amsterdam has to offer. For the curious, a trip to the Red Light District is a must. Anyone planning a visit to the area should remember that taking photographs of the women who work in the Red Light District is strictly prohibited. Be very careful where you point your camera!

Book your Red Light District Pub Crawl online in advance, to avoid queuing when you get there.
