The Georges Pompidou Centre was proposed in 1969 by the French president of the same name to create a place for modern art. A competition was launched two years later to find a design for the building and the winning entry created a talking point which divided the residents of Paris for many years, with some people commenting on its resemblance to an oil refinery.

The Pompidou Centre is located in the Beaubourg district of the city, close to a number of apartments in Paris that are available for holiday rental, and in spite of the opposition to the design, it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. It attracts around 25,000 visitors each day and visitors can also take in the library, large bookshop or see a film at the cinema, while the museum houses nearly 60,000 works of art covering a wide range of styles.

Visitors can go via the Rambuteau or Hotel de Ville Metro stations which are nearby, though the location is very central, being less than one kilometre from the Ile de la Cite and the Pont Neuf. The location of the Pompidou Centre is ideal for holiday makers as it means that many of the main tourist attractions are within walking distance, particularly if renting one of the many vacation apartments in Paris.

Tourists can visit the Pompidou Centre six days a week, as it is closed every Tuesday and each year on May 1st. The museum is open from 11am to 9pm most days, though workshops and other events will have variable. Entry to the building is free, but if you wish to go into the museum or cinema there are fees involved.
