Prado Museum

One of the World's Most Famous Art Museums

The Prado is one of the most famous art museums in the world and houses some of the most valuable treasures from European history. Over four floors, this temple of culture houses Spanish paintings and decorative arts, plus art from other European countries. The collections, initially consisting of the Spanish Royal Collection, date from the 12th to the 19th centuries and include large numbers of paintings by Goya and Velazquez. The Jeronimos building, a separate construction sitting behind the main museum, currently stages additional, temporary exhibitions.

The Prado Museum is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 9am to 8pm, including holidays. It is closed on 1 January, Good Friday, 1st May and 25th December. Full price tickets are eight Euros but there are child and student discounts, and entry is free on Sundays. The museum shop and bookstore sells books, gifts and a wide range of memorabilia and the cafe is open from 9am to 7.30pm.

Visitors are not allowed to take photos or videos, or consume food or drink in the museum galleries and are asked not to use mobile phones; so as to maintain the quiet and peaceful atmosphere. There are free cloakrooms, toilets and information points to make your visit to the Prado Museum a comfortable one.

There are several different entrances to the museum for people with pre-booked tickets, groups and for on the day ticket sales. The two buildings which make up the museum are on the Paseo del Prado to the East of central Madrid, an excellent area to find the best apartments Madrid can provide. The Prado is beside the Botanic Gardens and the wide open space of the Parque de Retiro. Here you will find some of the quieter apartments Madrid has available. The nearest Metro stations are Banco de Madrid and Atocha.
