Oxford Street
Oxford Street is probably the best known street in Britain, famous for its concentration of shops and its very British character. It runs from Marble Arch in the East to Tottenham Court Road in the West, bisecting the heart of London’s West End and attracts millions of shoppers every year. There are approximately 550 shops on the street including famous names such as Selfridges, John Lewis and many flagship stores from large companies such as Marks and Spencer.
As well as shops, there are a wide variety of bars, restaurants, and hotels, as well as residential apartments, London style. Landmarks on Oxford Street include the Marble Arch, the Oxford Circus interchange and the Centre Point building. Tucked away behind the shops are quieter streets full of the interesting apartments London is famous for.
The street was originally a Roman road leading in to the old City of London from the East. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the land in the area was bought by the Earl of Oxford and entertainment and shops sprang up. The street was then named after the Earl and a number of grand department stores were built, and still stand today. Set back from the hustle and bustle are numerous leafy squares such as Cavendish and Hanover where you’ll find some of the best apartments London has to offer.
Most of the shops have the same opening hours, from 10am to 7pm every day, except Thursdays when they stay open until 8pm, and Sunday when the hours are 12 noon to 6pm.
Known as Europe’s busiest shopping street it is only one and a half miles long. Every year people flock to Oxford Street to watch the ceremony of the Christmas lights being switched on by a celebrity, marking the beginning of the busy Christmas shopping season. If you want to be in the centre of the shopping district, the Oxford Street area has some of the most centrally located apartments London has to offer.
