Tibidabo Mountain
While your holiday home in Barcelona may afford some great views of the city, nothing can compare with the spectacular views from the top of Tibidabo Mountain. At 512 meters, the mountain can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. Getting to the top of Tibidabo is half the fun, while the amusement park at the summit provides the rest of the entertainment.
Taking a trip to the top of Tibidabo has been a popular excursion for over 100 years. The funicular railway, which still takes visitors up the mountain, was built in 1901. The amusement park is itself a historical attraction, having been built in the late 1880s; some of the original rides are still functioning today. The Temple de Sagrat Cor, the old Catholic church atop the mountain, was built in 1806.
A family vacation to a holiday home in Barcelona would not be complete without a trip to the amusement park. It may be short on white-knuckle rides, but few amusement parks in the world can boast such spectacular views (especially when on the ferris wheel!). The beautiful Temple de Sagrat Cor church is another spectacular destination atop Tibidabo. The neo-gothic church took 60 years to build and has a large statue of the Sacred Heart at the top. A lift runs to the top of the church, if you need an even greater view down to your holiday home in Barcelona.
Tibidabo Mountain rises to the north-west of Barcelona and can be seen from almost anywhere. Getting to the top of the mountain is an experience in itself. From your holiday home in Barcelona, head to the centre of the city and take the L7 train that leaves from Plaza de Catalunya station and head for Avenida Tibidabo. Then jump on the Tramvia Blau (blue tram) which will cost €3.50 for a return ticket. This takes you half way up Tibidabo; to reach the summit you then need to hop on the funicular train.
The best time to visit Tibidabo is in the summer. The crowds are much larger but the tram runs every day and the last return trip is later (in winter the tram only runs on Saturdays and Sundays and the last descent is at 6.00pm). It’s a good idea to prepare a picnic in your holiday home in Barcelona, as food is very expensive at the top of Tibidabo.
