Barcelona Cathedral (Cathedral of Santa Eulalia)
Barcelona’s City Cathedral is a truly spectacular example of Gothic architecture. Visitors from our apartments in Barcelona are sure to be impressed by both the exterior and interior of this magnificent structure. The area around the cathedral, with its small square, cafes and interesting shops, makes this an even more fascinating destination.
Construction of Barcelona Cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona, began in the 13th century and continued through to the 15th century. Up until the 19th century, however, the exterior of the cathedral was fairly unremarkable, at which point the Neo-Gothic facade was constructed. This addition helped to turn the structure into the impressive sight that it is today.
Barcelona Cathedral is one of the finest cathedrals in the whole of Spain and a great destination for visitors staying in our apartments in Barcelona. There are a number of notable features both within and outside the structure. Large bell towers dominate the building’s exterior with their Gothic pinnacles. Inside the cathedral, spectacular arches, altarpieces and side chapels create a stunning effect.
When visiting the cathedral from our apartments in Barcelona, make sure you see the crypt beneath the high altar. Inside is the incredible sarcophagus of Santa Eulalia, patroness of the cathedral. Drop some coins into the nearby money slot and lights will come on in the crypt.
Another beautiful part of the cathedral is the 14th century cloister, which overlooks a spectacular garden. Beneath the floor of the cloister lie the tombs of Barcelona’s ancient guild members. The cloister is also famous for its 13 white geese, whose ancestors have lived on the cathedral grounds for generations.
The cathedral is located at the Plaça de la Seu in the Barri Gòtic district of Barcelona. The easiest way to get to the cathedral from our apartments in Barcelona is to take the metro. Take the Yellow Line (L4) to the Jaume I station or the Green Line (L3)) to Liceu. The cathedral is within a 10 minute walk from both stations. Alternatively, take one of Barcelona’s city buses.
The cathedral is open daily from 9.00am to 1.00pm and then from 5.00pm to 7.00pm. Admission to the cathedral is free but there is a €1 fee to enter the small museum and a €2 fee to head up to the cathedral roof. If you want to see a great view of the city while staying in our apartments in Barcelona, a quick ascent to the cathedral roof is well worth the effort.
