The Palace of Catalan Music

A Stunning Concert Hall Tribute to Music

The 'Palau de la Música Catalana' is a stunning concert hall in Barcelona’s La Ribera district. Not only is the building itself a stunning example of Catalan modernism, the concert hall inside is regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. Add to this a world-class schedule of musical performances and the Palace of Catalan Music becomes one of the must-see destinations for visitors staying in our Barcelona holiday rentals.

The concert hall was designed by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner and construction was completed in 1908. The Orfeó Català, a Catalan choral society, made the Palace of Catalan Music their home after its inauguration on February 9 1908. In 1997, this remarkable concert hall was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Each year more than half a million people enter the Palace of Catalan Music to enjoy a variety of musical performances. Symphonies, chamber music, jazz and Cançó (traditional Catalan music) are just a few of the musical styles that can be heard in the concert hall. With such a wide variety of musical genres on offer you are sure to find something suitable to attend when staying in our Barcelona holiday rentals.

Even if music is not your passion, a visit to the Palace of Catalan Music is worthwhile, just to see the spectacular concert hall. The stained glass skylight is a magnificent sight, and the walls on both sides of the auditorium feature stunning stained glass panes set in elaborate arches. Beautiful statues and figures decorate the interior space, from the stage itself to the balconies up above.

The concert hall is easy to reach from all of our Barcelona holiday rentals. Located on Carrer de Sant Francesc de Paula in the old part of Barcelona known as La Ribera, the elegant building is easy to spot from the street. To get there, take the metro to Urquinaona station (lines 1 and 4) or take the bus (lines 17, 19, 40 and 45).

Opening hours are from 9.00am until 9.00pm all year round. Admission is €10 for visitors who just want to have a look around this fascinating building. Prices can vary from one musical performance to another and depend greatly on the seats chosen. If planning on catching a performance when staying in our Barcelona holiday rentals, have a look at the Palace of Catalan Music website for schedules and prices: www.palaumusica.org.
