Matterhorn
The Matterhorn is the most icon and majestic feature within the Swiss Alps, and is distinctive for its pyramid-like curve. The Matterhorn stands prominently over Zermatt, and at 4,478m, is the highest peak in the Alps.
For a long time, it was considered impossible to climb the Matterhorn, until 1865, when Edward Whymper conquered the ascent from the Italian side. Unfortunately the expedition had a tragic ending, with 4 of his climbing companions falling to their deaths. The complex ascent and tragic history has not deterred present-day climbers from attempting to scale the Matterhorn, with many visitors choosing the most popular route – the Hörnli Ridge - to reach the summit.
Loosely translated, Matterhorn means ‘meadow peak’, which refers to the grass valley at the foot of the mountain, of which the town of Zermatt has been built upon. Many Zermatt apartments offer fantastic views to admire the magnificent beauty of the Matterhorn.
