Ski Competitions
Located high in the Alps, Verbier is home to many of the steepest slopes one may find. Featuring the infamous Bec des Rosses, Verbier attracts a number of skiing competitions that use the strong angles to their advantage. Three competitions that are held here include the finals of the Freeride World Tour, the Verbier High Five by Carlsberg, and the XSpeed Ski Competition.
The final for the Freeride World Tour is Nissan’s Extreme Verbier, sponsored by Swatch, taking place from 24th March - 1st April 2012. The entire tour has six stops, including Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, Engadin St. Moritz, Kirkwood, Sochi, Feiberbrunn, and finally Verbier.
The Extreme Verbier features a mix of men and women’s ski and snowboard freeride competitions. Many of the riders have had a long road to Verbier, going through many qualifying rounds followed by the entire tour. The tour in its entirety takes only about two months, but the participants must prepare year round.
Following this event, the Verbier High Five by Carlsberg will be held from 30th-31st March. Beginning at 16:00, the Opening Party will kick off the competitions in a fun fashion with the band Waste holding a live concert.
At 8:00 on Saturday morning, registration will begin for the events. At 10:00, the events begin. The Giant Slalom starts the competition. This 800 m giant slalom with a variable descent is a great way to challenge all competitors, while showing off talents as well. This is followed by The Speed Monster, a downhill course, complete with a speed gun at 120 meters. The Big Bad Border Cross is a 400m race set in a 4 by 4 skier/boarder cross format. Obstacles and high turns make it an interesting race. The next race of the day will be the featured Carlsberg Triathlon. This race is known for the secrecy of its course. The three events that will be performed are kept secret to keep all the competitors on their toes. In order to participate in this event, it is wise to have some serious experience, as the course will prove extremely challenging for the most expert of skiers and boarders.
Finally, the day will end with the Parallel Slalom. Pros and some of the best ranked amateurs will battle side by side after rankings of the day have been determined. The intensity and competitive nature of this race makes it a spectator favorite. At 15:30, winners will be announced at the Chalet Carlsberg, followed with an After-Ski Party with the Pros at Pub Montfort.
The final of the large races held annually in Verbier is XSpeed Ski. This race will be held from 14th - 21st April 2012. This race is the final for the speed skiing FIS World Cup. With more details to come, this race, just like the others, is sure to be an adrenaline rush for spectators and participants alike.
