Discover London

In a little under 2000 years, London has grown from being a small Roman outpost on the banks of the River Thames, into a leading global city in a league of its own. It is home to a population of more than 8 million people, who between them speak more than 300 languages. It is also home to four World Heritage Sites and perhaps the most unique blend of ancient and modern architecture found anywhere in the world. No wonder then that it is Europe's most visited city, welcoming over 30 million international visitors each year. It is this huge diversity of residents and visitors that gives London its character, both distinctly British and yet home to the world. Iconic landmarks as old as the Tower of London and Westminster Abbey, sit comfortably with modern greats like the Gherkin and the Shard. Some of the world's greatest museums are here, from the British Museum to the Victoria and Albert Museum. London's theatre-land is (with venues like the Royal Opera House and Shakespeare's Globe theatre) world renowned, as is shopping in the city's West End. And with so many nationalities making London their home, you can dine out on almost any cuisine that takes your fancy, with everything from high-end fine dining to East End jellied eels or a traditional English pub meal.

When to visit London

British weather is unpredictable but rarely extreme making London a great place to visit all year round. The high-season is May through September (July and August being the busiest months) and December. Excellent low-season (January/February) deals and special deals from mid-January through mid-March, together with restaurant discounts in the London papers during February, make winter breaks really worth considering. Bargain prices can also be found for the shoulder-seasons of mid-September to November and March to April. Annual shopping sales take place during the first half of January and most of July. In summer: enjoy great parks like Hyde Park; events like Notting Hill Carnival; or, the best of British sport at Wimbledon or Lords. In winter: celebrate the Chinese New Year in Chinatown; go ice skating at Somerset House; or browse the Southbank's Christmas Market.

Getting to and around London

London has five major airports, all with excellent rail and road links to the city centre: Heathrow (also served by the tube); Gatwick; Stansted; London City Airport; and, Luton. International rail services with continental Europe are provided by Eurostar and a modern national rail network serves cities across the country. Within London, the tube is fast and easy to use; famous red buses are frequent and inexpensive; black taxi cabs are spacious and comfortable; and, Barclays' blue 'Boris Bikes' can be hired at many places around the capital.
