Sitges Cemetery
The old San Sebastian Cemetery is located opposite the stretch of beach that it shares its name with, and being situated on a hill, provides a great vantage point for the coastal town. Visitors looking for a peaceful and thoughtful activity should take a stroll around the old cemetery to appreciate the old, but beautiful array of tombstones, and 19th and 20th century sculptures that occupy the memorial site.
Superb works of art, these magnificent statues represent mythical pantheons, and are the works of many famous sculptors, such as Josep Llimona i Bruguera, Josep Reynés and Manel Fuxà. The sculptures are an ideal representation of Catalan Art Nouveau. It’s not just the imposing sculptures that will impress on your visit, but also the unique tombstones, which on a summer’s day, look particularly beautiful covered in an array of colourful flowers. Those laid to rest in the San Sebastian Cemetery include illustrious town figures and the Americanos – local town people who ventured to America in search of fortune in the 19th century.
The San Sebastian Cemetery is a lovely visit to reflect on the history of this quaint Mediterranean town and is close to many
Sitges holiday apartments. The cemetery is free to visit and is open Monday through Sunday, from 9am – 1pm, reopening from 3pm-6pm.
