Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla
The Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla juts out on a promontory overlooking the town, and is its most easily identifiable landmark. The church acts as the gateway to the old town, and if you make for its bell tower you can easily orient yourself whilst wandering about Sitges.
In the Middle Ages, the village of Sitges was centred around the promontory now occupied by the church, in a tight cluster of castle, hospital and church. These were surrounded by an enclosure wall, and connected with lower parts of the village by the small bridge.
Three streets led to the sea and were protected by gates, so that in this typically medieval village, there was an inner wall protecting the church and castle and an outer one for the rest of the village.
No doubt the bells of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla would ring out when a potential enemy appeared, from either the landward or seaward sides.
