Cau Ferrat Museum

The Home to the Famous Art Collections of Rusinol

The Cau Ferrat Museum was originally a meeting place for artists, and houses some amazing pieces of work. Forged iron work, and paintings by El Greco and Santiago Rusinol can be viewed at the museum. Cau Ferrat was originally the home and studio of the artist and writer Rusinol, (1861-1931), a post impressionist, poet and playwright who was one of the most influential figures in modernism in the Catalan region of Spain.

The American Charles Deering (1852-1927) had Palau Maricel built to hold his own art collection and it was almost an exact copy of Cau Ferrat and when, in 1921 Charles Deering went back home to US, the whole palace was emptied. It was not until 1969 that Deering’s copy of Cau Ferrat regained its intended use, and housed a private art collection of medieval art donated by Dr Perez Rosales. Today the Palace is used as a venue for receptions and other events, which provide one of the most beautiful views over the Mediterranean.

The Cau Ferrat Museum is worth visiting for the El Greco work on display and can explain the Palau Maricel and how Charles Deering received inspiration from the design of Cau Ferrat.

The Museum is situated in Sitges just outside Barcelona and it is open to the public from 9.30am until 6pm (in true Spanish style closing for a siesta from two to four each afternoon); on Saturdays it closes at 8pm and opens again on Sunday mornings. There is an entry fee and more details can be found by picking up the leaflets that are available at tourist information offices. Always check the current opening times before making a special journey. When it comes to looking for apartments, Sitges has a wide selection to suit all requirements and whether you are looking for luxury, or for more modest apartments, Sitges has something to suit all budgets.

If you are visiting Sitges in July and August it can be very hot and humid, so it is wise to visit Cau Ferrat and other museums early in the day, or in the evening before it gets too hot to walk around. September, October, May and June are pleasant months for wandering around as they are considerably cooler.
