Three Kings Parade
In Spain, Christmas is traditionally celebrated on the 6th January. The night before, on the 5th Sitges hosts The Three Kings Parade – a festive event mostly aimed at children. The parade is a vibrant procession of lights, costumes and music and is a joyful event for those staying in Sitges holiday apartments to ease any January blues.
The parade is focussed on the biblical story of the three wise men following the star to Bethlehem. The parade departs from Plaza Fragata, in front of the town’s church, with the procession led by an inflated star and the Three Kings, or ‘Tres Magi’ – Balthazar, Gaspar and Melchior. As the Three Kings proceed through the town they are followed by a procession of decorated floats, musicians, military bands and people dressed in medieval costumes.
Families gather in the streets to welcome the Three Kings and to accept the sweets that are thrown as they pass by. Those children who are unable to do so, are said to leave their shoes outside of their doors in hope of them being filled with sweets. The parade finishes at the Town Hall, where many children queue to give the Three Kings their letters requesting the present they desire. Traditionally, Spanish children will receive presents the following morning.
The parade is an enjoyable event for all visitors staying in Sitges holiday apartments with an impressive display of lights, fireworks and music. Many Sitges apartments are close to the parade and it is free to attend.
