Sitges Film Festival
The Sitges International Fantasy Film Festival is a great crowd-puller for fantasy film buffs staying in Sitges holiday apartments. Anyone with a passion for the weird and wonderful cannot miss out on this premier event in the fantasy and horror calendar, and it’s great fun as well, with lots of associated events taking place all around this vibrant town.
The International Fantasy Film Festival, or simply Film Festival as it is now known, was founded in 1968. It was called the International Week of Fantasy and Horror Movies.
It is attended not only by movie buffs, but also by those technicians involved in the industry, who are looking for new trends and special effects. Internationally renowned directors and movie stars attend the festival, from Quentin Tarantino and Cameron Diaz to Anthony Hopkins and David Kronenberg.
But as this is a proud part of Catalonia, there is also a rich selection of home-grown Catalan cinema blended in with all the death and horror, and also a retrospective aspect to the festival, so it is a serious event for movie aficionados.
The actual screenings include the famous Zombie Walk, when hundreds of ‘zombies’ stagger and lurch along the Streets of Sitges every year. The Zombie Walk always sets off from Edifici Miramar (Mirimar Building) on Carrer Davallada at about 8.30 pm.
Advance booking is necessary for holiday rentals; Sitges encourages all visitors to take a full part in this high-profile event in the movies calendar, as famous in its way as the Cannes Film Festival, but certainly a lot more fun.
