Festa Major de Sitges
La Festa Major de Sitges is an annual event which draws as many as 200,000 in honour of Sant Bartomeu, the town’s patron saint. Some of the most popular events are the processions of ‘gegants’ or giants, huge paper mache heads called capgrossos and the fire runs called correfocs. There are displays of stick dancing and a program of music of all kinds and concerts, plus the world famous castellers; which are essentially mult-level human towers with the strongest on the bottom, supporting their colleagues on their shoulders. This really is an awesome sight and made to look very easy by traditional castellers in Stiges. The spectacular fireworks displays are viewed from the beach and from boats on the sea by thousands of people.
Finding Sitges holiday apartments at festival time may not be easy. Sitges holiday apartments can be in short supply during the Festa Major de Sitges so it makes sense to book your Sitges holiday apartments early to avoid being disappointed. Festival time is not the best time to arrive in the hope of finding accommodation at short notice. Sitges holiday apartments are available in a variety of styles to suit all tastes and budgets.
Sitges has three bus routes which connect the different zones of the town to the centre and they all run at thirty minute intervals. Services begin at 6.45am on working days, at 8.45am on Saturdays and holidays and end at 8.45pm every day. There is also a taxi service which has thirty seven cars available to hire. The Esplanade Trenet runs from April to October, so it is available during festival time and travels along the esplanade from Fragata Beach to Terramar. This train-like vehicle runs every twenty minutes and the fare is approximately 2 Euros one way or three Euros round trip.
Sitges is a place that attracts visitors from all over the world and it gets more than three hundred days of sunshine per year which has attracted artists, sculptors and writers since the late nineteenth century. Despite the cosmopolitan feel to the town, it still maintains its roots as an old fishing and farming village in its architectural style. There is a very gentle, unhurried feeling to Sitges, especially where its art and many traditions have encompassed the seventy different nationalities that live harmoniously here.
