Terminus Station
Terminus Station, or Stazione Termini in Italian, is Rome’s main railway station and it gets its name from the ancient Roman Baths which are situated directly across from the main entrance. From here there are rail services to all major cities in Italy and daily services to Paris, Munich, Geneva, Basel and Vienna. The station has 29 platforms to date and handles an average of more than 150 million passengers per year. Roma Termini is one of the busiest and largest railway stations in Europe.
Pope Pius IX opened Terminus Station in 1863 and plans to rebuild were put together in 1937, as part of the 1942 World’s Fair but unfortunately these plans were not completed. Today’s station was designed by 2 teams that won a competition in 1947 and the new building was finally inaugurated in 1950. The building has a double curve cantilever roof made from reinforced concrete and this has earned it the name ‘The Dinosaur‘. The aluminium friezes that decorate the station are the work of Amerigo Tot and are crafted to capture the speed and sound of trains in artistic form. In 2006, the station was dedicated to Pope John Paul II.
If you are arriving in Rome by rail it is equally convenient to travel to all areas with available vacation rentals. Rome has an excellent public transport system that can provide quick access to your planned vacation rentals. Rome has many apartments to rent ranging from luxury to budget but as a general rule, those located in the city centre will be more expensive because of their location, as it is in all major cities.
The two available Metro Lines cross here and there is a bus station at Piazza dei Cinquecento which is right in front of the station, but the Rome tram system starts at Porta Maggiore is a good 1500 metres east of the station entrance. When choosing vacation rentals, Rome is an ideal choice, due to the myriad of activities available for short and long term holidaymakers.
Information relating to all services from this station is available on the premises and from various travel websites, it is always advisable to ensure that the timetables you have are up to date as routes and schedules can vary a lot during the year.
