The Colosseum
The Colosseum is probably the most famous ancient building in Rome, and a popular attraction for those staying in Rome apartments. It was featured in the 2000 blockbuster film, ‘Gladiator’ and in the much earlier ‘Spartacus’, to name just two examples. This huge building is situated in Piazza Colosseo and is easily accessible by public transport, so whatever your final choice of Rome vacation rentals, location need not be a restrictive factor.
The whole structure towers forty eight metres into the air, arch upon arch with a total area of 190 metres by 155 metres. It is not difficult to imagine as many as 50,000 shouting Romans baying for blood; as gladiators and wild animals fought for their entertainment. The Colosseum was first opened in 80AD by Emperor Titus in a huge extravaganza which included one hundred days of games and it became the venue for Rome’s most popular sports, including gladiator contests, fights between men and wild animals, and even mock sea battles.
All that is visible of the Colosseum today is the bare shell, with a view of passage ways along that the slaves and animals walked through before the contests began. Other Roman amphitheatres are actually dug into the hillsides, but the stone and concrete built Colosseum is free standing and has served as an architectural design model for many different stadia all over of the world. More information about the Colosseum is available here.
From Civitavecchia port there is a ferry which goes into central Rome, and a whole network of buses and railways services including the underground which will take you directly to the Colosseum.
