Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona

Relax and Watch the World go by in this Vibrant Square

No matter which district of the city you choose for your Rome holiday rentals, the Piazza Navona is easily accessible. The Piazza is a square which was built on the old site of the Stadium of Domitian (which was originally built by Emperor Titus Flavius Domitianus in 86 AD), had a much bigger arena than that of the Colosseum, and was mostly a venue for athletic events. It is easy to get to from any Rome holiday rentals.

If you stand at one end of the Piazza and look at the overall shape, you will notice that it is not actually a ‘square’, but more of an elongated oval shape which reflects its previous use as a stadium. It was not until the 15th century that the stadium was paved to create a square, which was named Piazza Navona and became the city’s main market. However, there are many reminders and remnants of Domitian’s Stadium all around the square and the best way to make sure that you do not miss any of these, is to take a guided tour of the square; this includes an underground tour and starts at the Piazza Tor.

The most popular attractions here are the three fountains, especially the largest one: Fountain of the Four Rivers, or Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, which was built in the four years between 1647 and 1651. The other two fountains on Piazza Navona are the Neptune Fountain at the square’s northern end, and The Moor Fountain.

No matter where you prefer to book your Rome holiday rentals, access to famous sites such as the Piazza Navona, the Colosseum and all the other famous landmarks is easy because of the public transport system. Bus services, a rail service, an underground railway, a tram service (covering the Colosseum) and a ferry service are available to link you to all areas of the city, no matter which area your Rome holiday rentals are located in.

Up to date information on public transport is available in most apartment buildings, and leaflets on attractions, opening times and timetables for buses, ferries and trains can be picked up from tourist information offices. It is usually best to avoid public transport during rush hour due to traffic jams. Avoid travelling at this time if possible; especially if you are riding a scooter or motorbike since the heavy air pollution will not make for a pleasant experience.
