The National Museum

One of Prague's Oldest and Largest Museums

The National Museum is the biggest and oldest museum in the Czech Republic, and is a must when staying in a Prague apartment. There are several floors of permanent exhibits and a space for concerts and other performances. The large building immediately to the left of the museum was the former home of the Czechoslovakian parliament during the Communist period; it was added to the museum in 2009 and is now called simply the New Building of the National Museum. This is where the museum’s temporary exhibitions are put on display.

The Neo-Renaissance structure of the museum was designed by Josef Schultz, and construction lasted from 1818 until 1891. The opulent entrance hall will surely impress visitors who rent apartments in Prague. The space features intricate stonework that graces the majestic, broad staircases and soaring ceilings.

The National Museum has several interesting permanent collections including exhibits that outline the histories of Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia; mineralogical collections, zoological collections, paleontological collections, and anthropological collections. Children are drawn to the large collection of stuffed animals, and the models of extinct animals such as gigantic mammoths.

The museum is located in Prague’s city centre, just a short distance from many Prague apartment rentals and several of the city’s busiest metro stations. Holiday-makers who rent apartments in Prague should have no trouble getting to Wenceslas Square by taking the metro Lines A or C. For disabled visitors, there is wheelchair access to the building around the left-hand side (as one faces the museum from outside); simply ring the buzzer for entrance. The museum is open daily from 10am until 6pm and is closed the first Tuesday of the month. Visitors can purchase separate tickets to either the old or new National Museum buildings or can buy a combination ticket for a discounted rate that covers admission to both.

Any city break to Prague would be incomplete without a visit to the National Museum in Wenceslas Square. Visitors will find choosing an apartment rental in Prague, offers additional space, flexibility and privacy during their stay.
