Lesser Town (Mala Strana)
Nested around the foothills of Prague Castle, Lesser Town is located on the west side of the River Vltava, opposite the larger towns of Eastern Prague, with its name literally translating to ‘little side’. Founded in 1257, Lesser Town was the district least affected by Prague’s historic conflicts and retains many of its magnificent Baroque landmarks and old houses.
Lesser Town was formed from an amalgamation of settlements that were beneath Prague Castle, consisting mostly of German craftsmen. During the reign of Premysl Otakar II, Mala Strana was classed a royal town. The reign of Charles IV, saw Prague establish itself as one of the most prosperous cities in central Europe with many building developments initiated during this era. These were later destroyed in 1514 by fire and war, and rebuilt with the Baroque-style architecture the city is known for today.
Lesser Town Square is a must-see for anyone staying in a Prague apartment rental, with stunning architecture, picturesque cobbled streets and charming pubs and restaurants.
Prague Castle stands prominently over Lesser Town, and is an impressive construction of gothic architecture. The site is also made up of a variety of museums, viewing towers and art galleries, so is well worth a visit for half a day or so.
Strolling from Prague Castle, through the streets of Lesser Town, you will approach the River Vltava and the impressive Charles Bridge, which connects the eastern and western sides of Prague.
Prague holiday apartments can be found on both the eastern and western sides of the city, providing guests with great access to many of Prague’s most iconic landmarks.
