The Louvre Museum
The Louvre used to be a royal palace, but has been turned into one of the largest and most famous museums in the world. It attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and art enthusiasts have to spend several days there if they want to see every exhibit for longer than a second or two. For those with a specific interest in the Louvre, there are many Paris holiday rentals nearby, which can provide them with the perfect sightseeing base.
Some of the most famous exhibits include the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci and the Venus de Milo, though there are hundreds of other canvases and sculptures which will be instantly recognisable to those with an interest in art. Many who take advantage of Paris holiday rentals are art lovers who wish to tour the museums, of which there are many in the city.
The museum was originally a fortress in the 12th century and became home to the French royal family in the 14th century. Various works to improve the facade and interior of the building were carried out over the next few centuries, although when Louis XIV moved to Versailles, work was halted. In 1989 the glass pyramid was added outside the museum which brings sunlight in to an underground floor. Its design is not in keeping with the rest of the museum and received criticism, but is now an instantly recognisable feature of the Louvre.
It is situated on the opposite side of the river from Les Invalides but is just a short walk away. The nearest Metro station is the Palais Royal - Musee de Louvre and bus links are also excellent in the area. The area is also home to many of the apartments for which the city is famous and a large number have become Paris holiday rentals.
The museum is open six days a week, closing on Tuesdays, and is also closed on some public holidays. Most days the museum is open from 9am to 6pm, though some of the exhibition rooms have different opening hours. It is a good idea to check the official website for current details on opening times.
Entry costs between six and ten Euros depending on your circumstances, though some exhibitions have free entry. If you staying in one of the many Paris holiday rentals available locally, then it is a good idea to take advantage of some of the free exhibitions on offer.
