Culture by day, but party by night is Madrid's mantra. Nightlife here is vibrant. Tapas bars are crowded with locals and tourists alike, enjoying this quintessential Spanish food. Some offer live flamenco, but this passionate and intense music can also be seen in theatres and smaller venues across the capital. The final glory of Madrid is shopping. Expensive elegance can be found in the Salamanca district although the Sunday morning El Rastro flea market offers quirky bargains to suit more modest budgets.

When to visit Madrid

The city experiences cold winters and hot summers. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, and these cooler months are filled with events. Jazz and dance festivals, and Feriarte, an important art and object d'art fair, are all held in November. January and February hosts Gastrofestival, a major gastronomic and cultural event. Madrid fashion week is in March. The summer is filled with local district fiestas but the major July city event is Veranos de la Villa, with city-wide opera, pop concerts and dance shows. The Teatro Real opera season runs from September to July. Christmas and New Year are lively and crowded occasions with a Christmas market; San Silvestre Vallecana New Year's Eve running race and the Puerta del Sol New Year's Eve celebrations and grape eating.

Getting to and around Madrid

Barajas international airport is 12 km outside the city, and a 12 minute Metro ride to the city. Madrid is served by an excellent Metro system which is far easier to use than buses.
