Madrid Metro
Europe’s third largest underground transport network
The Spanish capital of Madrid boasts the third largest Metro system in Europe and the sixth largest in the world. The 300 stations and 293km of track, make the Metro a comfortable and convenient way to travel the city. When staying in your Madrid apartment rental, travelling on the Metro is a great way to experience the city’s culture, with the added benefit of avoiding the congested roads.
Madrid takes pride in its public transport system and each station is well-maintained and offers something unique for travellers passing through. Many Madrid Metro stations represent the artistic nature, history and development behind the city. The Carpetana station is a great example, housing replicas of animal fossils excavated from the station grounds during renovations in 2008. The people of Madrid have taken the opportunity to bring an educational aspect to the station, featuring information boards on the 14 million-year-old paleontological remains.
When travelling in the north of Madrid, you may find your journey takes you through Hortaleza station. A spectacular mural decorates the walls of the main hall and can be seen as visitors travel down to the station platforms. Travelling down the escalators, visitors will journey through the history of the station’s construction – depicted in 3,796 photographs. Artists - and brothers - Javier Melero and Juan Carlos, developed the masterpiece, known as ‘Phortaleza’ as a tribute to those who contributed to the station.
Travelling from Goya station, visitors will have the privilege of viewing the fine works of Francisco de Goya, of whom the station was named after. His 17th and 18th century prints adorn the station walls and are distinctive against the vibrant yellow of the station’s décor. Other stations of interest include the Argüelles station with its youthful murals, and the Arganzuela-Planetario station for its astronomical theme.
The Metro is a cost-effective way to travel about the city with a single ticket in Zone A costing just €1. For a single journey anywhere else on the Metro line, the price is €2. Visitors looking to travel extensively around Madrid may look to purchase a 10 ride pass for €9.30. Madrid apartment rentals are located within close proximity to many of the Metro stations offering self-catering facilities for a truly independent city break.
