Atocha Railway Station
Atocha Railway Station is Madrid’s largest station serving intercity and regional trains, including high speed Seville and Barcelona services. The station stands on the site of Madrid’s first railway station which opened in the mid 19th century.
The station is situated in the Atocha area of Arganzuela, an area in which there are many Madrid holiday rentals, to cater for the thousands of tourists who pour into the city each week. It is located close to many of the tourist attractions available to visitors such as the Thyssen Museum, Retiro Park and the Reina Sofia museum.
The station also serves local transport links, with the Atocha Renfe underground station situated within the complex. Those arriving at the station to stay in one of the numerous Madrid holiday rentals, will find that they are easily able to navigate their way around the city, with its excellent bus links and regular underground trains. There is a metro link to Madrid’s airport, making it easy for those who are coming in by plane.
Those waiting for trains will find that there is now an array of shops where they can pass some time, along with several cafes and even a nightclub. There is also a tropical garden which provides a pleasant area to relax and does not have the same feel as railway stations in other countries, which are not designed to please the eye but are simply functional.
There is no official website for the station but tickets can be purchased online from the RENFE website, and they are also available from several outlets in the city. Ticket prices vary depending upon the destination and time of day that you are travelling. Tourists will find that many of the staff at the station speak good English and signs are in English also.
Tourists who have based themselves in one of the available Madrid holiday rentals will find that the station makes it possible to explore other parts of the country, and taking day trips to other cities is feasible. There is a long-distance link with Paris, so it is ideal for those who are exploring Europe by rail. For those visiting Madrid, holiday rentals are an ideal choice and are conveniently located close to transport links.
