Campo de Moro City Park
The Campo del Moro City Park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Madrid. There are a large number of urban parks in the city and Campo del Moro covers 20 hectares. It is part of the gardens of the Royal Palace, which is located very close by and many tourists will take advantage of this, and visit both attractions in the same day.
The name of the park comes from the 12th century, when a Muslim leader camped on the site while trying to take the city from the Christians. The royal family used the site in the centuries following, to hunt game and later formal gardens were designed. Visitors from the many vacation rentals Madrid has available come to the gardens for the tranquillity and to view the craftsmanship which has gone into the design and care of the gardens, and for the intricate and beautiful fountains which are situated there.
Visitors can easily reach the park by using the underground system, disembarking at the Opera Real station. The bus system operates a number of routes, which pass by the park and the Royal Palace, and provide a cost effective method of travelling around the city.
The park is open most days of the year with the exception of some public holidays. There is no official website though most good sites, which focus on tourist information for Madrid should be able to provide up to date information on the opening hours. Visitors should also be aware that if they visit during the winter months the opening hours are different. The good news is that it is not necessary to purchase a ticket to view the gardens, as entry is free all year round, making this an excellent place to visit, especially for those on a budget.
