Thyssen Museum
The Thyssen Museum was established in 1992 and has proved to be very popular with tourists staying in Madrid apartments. Situated close to many Madrid vacation rentals, it can be found in the Paseo del Prado part of the city. The building is an art museum and the works housed there cover many different styles from across Europe.
The collection housed in the museum was started during the 1920s, by Baron Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza de Kaszon. He managed to acquire a large number of works in America during the 1930s, when collectors were selling pieces off to raise funds during the depression. The collection has been added to by his descendants, who founded the museum and are still actively involved with its running.
The museum is situated close to Retiro Park and is open six days a week, from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 7pm. There are some public holidays during which the museum is closed, and details on these can be obtained from the official website. The nearest underground station is Banco de Espana.
Tourists will pay €12 to enter the museum, and the additional cost of entering some of the regular temporary exhibitions will vary, so it is a good idea to check in advance on the official website, to ensure that you have the correct information for the exhibits that you wish to see. Tickets can be bought in person, over the telephone or online.
There are no guided tours of the museum but visitors can take advantage of one of the audio guides which are available in a number of major European languages. Temporary exhibitions are held regularly and cover subjects such as Impressionism and the works of individual artists.
