Queen Sofia Museum
The Queen Sofia Museum, or Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, is a large modern art museum in Madrid, located near our Madrid apartments. Over two million visitors have come to view the museum’s exquisite collections of Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, and several other popular Spanish artists. Perhaps the most popular and well-known painting in the gallery is Picasso’s “Guernica”, a mural commissioned by the Spanish Republican government depicting the suffering caused by the bombing at Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. The Queen Sofia Museum features few international artists, focusing most on Spanish culture and history.
Celebrating the work of 20th century artists, The Queen Sofia Museum was established in 1992. The building was once an 18th century hospital, but renovations beginning in 1980 transformed the space into the wondrous Queen Sofia Museum that exists today. Sections of the museum began to open to the public in 1988 as they were completed, four years before full establishment.
In addition to the gallery, The Queen Sofia Museum has a library that specializes in art. There are over 100,000 books, 3500 recordings, and almost 1,000 videos according to the museum website, museoreinasofia.es. The library, in addition to a shop and café, make it easy to spend an entire day at The Queen Sofia Museum.
Admission for The Queen Sofia Museum is €6 for general admission; however, discounts are offered for groups, volunteers, and friends to the museum. Students are able to enter at no cost with proof of identification. Free admission days are often posted on the museum website. For those interested in the details, audio guides are available for an extra charge in English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German. Discounts for audio guides are also available for students, friends, and large groups.
