New Year's Eve in Madrid
Madrid is famous for its vibrant nightlife, so where better to see in the New Year than in the Spanish capital. To be a part of the sociable New Year’s Eve celebrations, ensure you gather together at the Puerta del Sol around midnight. Every year on New Year’s Eve, or ‘Noche Vieja’, locals and tourists partake in the traditional activity of consuming 12 grapes – one for every chime of the Casa de Correos clock, signifying midnight and the transition into the New Year.
There is good-hearted cheer and a sociable atmosphere at the event, with much laughter from visitors attempting to succeed in the edible challenge – with each grape symbolising the 12 months of the commencing year. Grapes are often consumed in conjunction with a bottle of Cava, before the crowds disperse into Madrid’s array of lively bars and clubs. As with many Spanish events, Christmas and New Year’s Eve is a family event, with many bars and clubs not opening until 12.30am onwards, to allow staff to enjoy the event with their own families.
You can reach the Puerta del Sol easily from many Madrid apartments and with the city being such a popular festive destination, it is advisable to book accommodation well in advance. The closest Metro station is Puerta del Sol.
