Westminster Abbey
A visit to Westminster Abbey is an absolute must for London apartment guests. The abbey is an Anglican church of the British monarchy, rich in history, and home to several royal ceremonies and burials. The site overlooks the Thames River in Westminster, London. Throughout the abbey’s 700 years, it has hosted at least 38 coronations and 15 royal weddings, including Prince William and Kate Middleton’s much anticipated ceremony on the 29th of April 2011.
King Edward and King Dunstan first founded the site in 960 AD with the construction of a monastery, but it has since been renovated several times, developing into the striking building that it is today. The current structure is a Gothic style, which was most recently restored over a 25-year period, ending in 1995 with the addition of saintly figures over the west doors.
Westminster Abbey houses over 600 monuments and memorial statues. It is the final resting place of over 3,000 people including Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth I along with several other royal figures. Memorials pay tribute to monumental leaders such as famous poets, scientists, and the soldiers lost in the world wars.
Visitors can pay for guided headphone tours at specified times. See the information desk for purchase. The Westminster Abbey also houses a museum that is open each day from 10:30am-4:00pm.
Westminster Abbey proves to be an iconic site that is captivating for both adults and children. Adult admission is £15 for the abbey and museum. Children under 11 are admitted at no cost. Family tickets include 2 adults and 2 children and can be purchased for £30. We recommend that guests arrive early to experience the abbey before it gets busy.
When the church is not guiding tours, it holds worship services that are open to people of all faiths. Because Westminster Abbey is a functioning place of worship, changes in services may influence visiting hours.
