Hyde Park
One of the most famous of London’s many parks; Hyde Park has a historic landscape and many interesting features. The park’s history dates back to Henry VIII who used it as a hunting ground. It has a road running through it, Rotten Row, which was made for royal processions in 1689. It extends over more than 350 acres and is filled with trees, meadows, shrubs and flowers such as roses. Hyde Park is a natural habitat for many species of wildlife including birds, butterflies and bats.
Bayswater Road runs along the North Edge and Kensington Road to the South, while on the Eastern edge is Park Lane. To the West of the park are Kensington Gardens and Kensington Palace. This is a very high class residential area with many exclusive London apartments. Running through the centre of the park is The Serpentine, an elongated lake which was created for Queen Caroline in the 1700s.
In more recent history, two large memorials have been erected: a fountain commemorating Princess Diana and the 7th July memorial in remembrance of those who died in the 2005 terrorist attack. Speaker’s Corner is known as a place where people can stand and speak freely on whatever subject they want. Hyde Park is a beautiful green space which is highly appreciated by people staying in London apartments.
There are many leisure facilities in the park including the Lido outdoor swimming pool, open from May through to September, and the tennis and sports centre, open all year round. Hyde Park has several cafes and an attractive restaurant called the Serpentine bar and kitchen, open from 8am to 8pm. The park has been the site of many great events over the years including the Great Exhibition of 1851, political demonstrations, and more recently, big outdoor concerts. Having a view over the park is a big selling point for London apartments and those with beautiful views are very highly rated.
Hyde Park is managed by The Royal Parks, entry is free and it is open from 5am to midnight all year round. It is surrounded by some of the most prestigious London apartments. There is very limited parking available in the area so it is best reached by public transport. The nearest Underground stations are Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge, Lancaster Gate and Marble Arch.
