Olympic Venue: Wembley Stadium
Wembley Stadium regularly hosts international football matches and, not surprisingly, is the chosen venue for the Football events of the Olympics, of which there are 16 men’s teams and 12 women’s team competing. This newly built venue is an iconic feature of London, and replaced the ‘Empire Stadium’ that once occupied the site from 1923 until 2003 when it was demolished. With its retractable roof, Wembley Stadium will provide Olympic visitors with protection from the elements, for all areas of seating. It’s most prominent feature is the 134m arch that it visible from as far as 13 miles, which by night, is illuminated to display an impressive halo effect. The tournament will see the competing Football teams split into groups, whereby the winning 8 teams will go through to the quarter finals. A knock-out stage will then commence with the 2 winning teams competing for the medal. Wembley Stadium is located in North West London.
