The British Museum

The Oldest Museum in the World

Founded in 1753, the British Museum is the oldest museum in the world. With exquisite and precious exhibits from across the world, spanning 2 million years of history and civilization.

If you’re considering a city break this year, the chances are that you will have selected holiday Apartments; London has many to choose from. This fantastic city is positively buzzing with the ultra modern, the antique, the futuristic and the ancient, very frequently within a few paces of one another. And one of the city’s many irresistible attractions, is the stunning British Museum in Great Russell Street, preserving treasures from the ancient past along with cutting edge modern technology.

Originally a collection presided over the physician Sir Hans Sloane (1660 – 1753); it grew exponentially over the years thanks to the many gifts donated from far and wide as word of ‘Sloane’s cabinet of curiosities’ spread. Eventually, the original premises were overflowing with exhibits and in 1847 a new building was designed and built by architect Robert Smirke. And what a building this turned out to be: Smirke’s creation was a neo-classical colossus, with a grand colonnaded façade and cavernously spacious interior.

For fabulous holiday and short break Apartments London has an unrivalled selection; and perhaps its most popular visitor attraction is the British Museum itself. The museum’s 90 galleries span a total of two and a half miles. Divided into specialist sections, the permanent displays include priceless treasures from Western Asia, Rome, Greece and Egypt. You’ll also be able to marvel at exquisite examples of Oriental art, stand in awe before the Elgin Marbles, gaze in reverence at the infamous Rosetta Stone, and shiver slightly at the Egyptian Mummies.

The contemporary architect Sir Norman Foster recently transformed the Museum’s scope and appearance with his magnificent ‘Great Court’ – a vast, glass-covered public square which floods the area with soothing natural light but repels heat from the sun.

Admission to the museum remains free, and opening times are 10am to 5.00pm from Monday to Saturday and 2.30 to 6.00pm on Sundays (the museum is closed from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, and on New Year’s Day and Good Friday).

The nearest underground stations are Tottenham Court Road and Holborn, although Russell Square and Goodge Street are also relatively close. There are also numerous bus routes which pass the museum.

For its incomparable range of different Apartments London is unbeatable; but it’s also worth visiting because of breathtaking attractions such as the British Museum. For countless cultural treasures within easy reach of your Apartments, London is the premier city to visit.
