Nelson's Column
Located in the heart of Trafalgar Square, Nelson’s Column is one of London’s most famous monuments and epitomises what makes the city so special. Built in the 19th Century in honour of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, it is the main attraction of Trafalgar Square and provides a stunning view of some truly special architecture, all in the name of one of the country’s most loved historical figures. The area is always a hotspot for tourists renting London apartments, which helps create a buzzing atmosphere in Central London.
Following his death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 during the Napoleonic War, a monument to commend Lord Nelson was soon commissioned and built. The four lions at the base of the structure were added in 1867, built in honour of Lord Nelson’s victories in battle and are made from melted French guns. In 2006 Nelson’s Column was recorded at just short of 170 feet tall, which has made it a popular monument to climb for various charities in recent decades.
Trafalgar Square itself makes for an extremely attractive tourist hotspot down to the various statues, including Nelson’s Column, but also because of the fountains that surround the area. If you’re renting one of our London apartments near Christmas, the square becomes a hub of carol signing and festivities, whilst being completed by its iconic giant Christmas Tree.
Due to the structure’s size, you may well be able to see Nelson’s Column from one of our London apartments, though it looks even better in person. It is a monument that the city of London is proud of, showcasing why London is regarded as having some of best architecture in the world.
