The National Gallery

World's Greatest Collection of Western Paintings

Beyond a magnificent neo-classical facade of Portland stone you will discover the world's largest collection of Western European painting with over 2,300 works dating back to the thirteenth century.

Holiday Apartments in London are the perfect based to explore the magnificent architecture, fabulous museums and breathtaking art galleries that London has to offer. If you’re taking a short city break, Apartments in London not only suit all budgets but act as launch pads to the city’s many historic sights.

The fabulous National Gallery in Trafalgar Square was created when King George IV persuaded the Houses of Parliament to buy 38 paintings from a London banker (John Julius Angerstein) in 1824. This small acorn has grown into the mighty oak that is The National Gallery. Art lovers from across the world rent Apartments in London just to experience this one attraction.

The sheer quantity of paintings can be a little bewildering to the novice visitor. There are various trails and audio guides to help orientate you, but a good tip is to concentrate on some of the ground floor’s most important paintings. You’ll easily find Holbein’s ‘The Ambassadors’, Velázquez’s ‘Rokeby Venus’, van Eyck’s ‘Arnolfini Marriage’, Da Vinci’s cartoon of ‘The Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist and Saint Anne’, Constable’s famous ‘The Haywain’ and the infamous van Gogh masterpiece, ‘Sunflowers’. There are also paintings by Michelangelo, Gainsborough, Rembrandt, Raphael and Rubens.

From the thirteenth century you are transported to the twenty first century In the Sainsbury Wing. You discover a computer information centre, where you can view an image of any painting in the gallery with a touch of the screen, produce a custom tour of your favourite art works and even print off a reproduction of the painting you’re most enthralled by.

There is a shop and a restaurant on site and admission to the Gallery is free. It’s open every day from 10.00am to 6.00pm, except Wednesdays when it closes an hour later, at 7.00 pm. The nearest underground station is Charing Cross (which is also the nearest mainline station) and there are numerous bus routes which pass through Trafalgar Square. Public car parks can be found in the nearby Whitcomb Street.

The best way to experience London is with a short stay rather than a day trip – there’s simply too much to see in a single day and the National Gallery alone will effortlessly consume many an hour. Happily, with Apartments in London at such reasonable prices, a stay in this spectacular city is within reach of most budgets.
