Wimbledon Tennis
The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship is the oldest tennis tournament. It is also the only Grand Slam tournament still to be played on the original grass surface. Taking place in the last two weeks of June and into early July, spectators flock to Wimbledon to experience the energetic atmosphere first hand. This prestigious event retains traditions such as a strict dress code for competitors and the serving of pimm’s, strawberries and cream for spectators.
Nearly 500,000 attend Wimbledon for the two week event to watch players from over 60 nations compete. The first week schedule commences with early singles and doubles matches, with top players on the centre and courts 1 and 2. The finals for the ladies and gentlemen’s single matches are scheduled for the last Saturday and Sunday of the championships.
Tickets can be obtained in advance through a public ballot, first held in 1924, where applicants are selected by random. It is possible to purchase tickets on the day, with approximately 500 seats allocated for each court, but visitors should be prepared to queue. For high profile matches, visitors tend to queue overnight to secure their ticket.
The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship is a fantastic experience for anyone visiting London and is easy to reach by car or public transport. London Apartments allow you to explore Wimbledon and the sights of central London offering flexible, self-catered accommodation.
