Notting Hill
Notting Hill is an area located in West London. It is one of the trendier areas in London with its vast amount of antique and vintage shopping. Its quirky nature can be seen through the brightly painted homes and its popularity can be credited to the movie starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant entitled, 'Notting Hill'.
The area was originally a very rural area with the townspeople working as farmers or brick makers. During the 19th century, Notting Hill began to develop, thanks to the Ladbroke family, who owned the majority of property in Notting Hill, into a community with streets creating a more suburban feel. The unique homes in Notting Hill were designed by Allason in 1823. They created the idea of having communal gardens in the back of homes, which could not be seen from the street.
If looking for a different shopping experience, be sure to visit Notting Hill. From Portobello Road, which brings out thousands of unique vendors selling antique trinkets and jewelry, to other vintage shops selling top designer vintage pieces. The shopping is unreal. If you get hungry during your shopping excursion be sure to try one of the food stands on Portobello Road as they have great falafel, bruschetta, and crepes! There is also a delicious bakery along the street called Hummingbird Bakery, which is known for its rich and delicious cupcakes.
The other exciting event located in Notting Hill is the annual carnival, which is the second largest street festival in the world. It occurs every August with lavish music, dancing, food, and drinks!
Notting Hill's artistic and unique atmosphere brings a new and refreshing light to the city of London. Notting Hill, despite its shopping is a much more relaxed and family oriented area with quaint homes and beautiful green parks. An afternoon in Notting Hill is an experience that cannot be missed.
