East End
With a classically negative sense, the East End is looking at today with a smug grin on its face. The modern area is known for things such as Spitalfields market, a market full of unique fashions and foods. Whitechapel is also in East End, housing the Whitechapel Bell Foundary. The East End is most popular and known for Brick Lane, an area known for its fantastic market atmosphere and food.
The negative stamina of the area began because of general overcrowding of the city. Often, immigrants were forced out of the city centre and into the East End. This made the area a hot spot for poverty, disease, and criminal acts. Irish, Bangladeshi, and Ashkenazi Jews did business here via trade of clothing. During the second World War, the East End became an easy target. This caused many of its residents to disperse into different suburbs. Development of the Docklands, Canary Wharf, and the upcoming Olympic Stadium have turned the East End around for the better, even though it still faces a negative stamina from the past.
Today, the East End is most closely associated with Brick Lane and Spitalfields market. Other things it is known for is being London’s curry capital, housing some of the most famous and best curry places in London. It is also known for its historic Canary Wharf.
Upcoming for the East End is the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. A new stadium is under construction for these events. The area is very excited for these improvements and to invite the world to see what it has to offer.
Through thick and thin, the East End has something to offer for all of its visitors. Whether you’re out for a night on the town, just out for a bite, or looking for a new outfit at the market.
