Docklands
The London Docklands are located on the South East end of London. Parts of the boroughs of Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Greenwich and Newham are all part of the unofficial area.
Before the London Docklands received its name, it was called the Port of London. At one time, this was the world’s largest port. In 1971, the name London Docklands was used in a government report, and since has become adopted. Previous to any naming, Romans, Normans, and many other groups that had any conquering power have called the Docklands theirs. Hit by over 2,500 bombs during the Blitz of World War II, the Docklands was one of the most devastated areas of London. Because of the massive destruction, the Docklands struggled. Soon new methods of shipping were adopted and the area could no longer support the deep ships that it needed to. London Dockland’s ports closed, leaving almost 21 square kilometers of land open while poverty and unemployment were extremely high. Because of these delays, it would be almost 20 years before some of the first construction began.
The 1980’s brought light for the Docklands, with business incentives and many grants and development opportunities. The DLR was built for easy transport, and finally the famous Canary Wharf area was developed. All this led up to the beauty of what London knows and prides itself in today.
Because of so much development, the population in the Docklands has more than doubled over the past 30 years. Now, it is a major business centre and growing residential centre. Far from its peak, the Docklands are thriving now more than ever. Many of the surrounding areas including Deptford and Greenwich are currently undergoing large projects in hopes of becoming the next attractive site for many future home buyers and commuting businesspeople.
Because of its rich recent history and modern development, the Docklands of London prove to be a very attractive site to visit. With easy access to the rest of London via the tube and the DLR, it is an ideal place for one who wants to be close to a city with the modern sophistication of a business centre.
