Kensington

A Welcoming Area with Shopping, Museums, and More

Kensington is a vast area in London including High Street Kensington and South Kensington. It is located in the west district of London and combines commercial success with cultural museums and residency for numerous Londoners.

The affluent neighborhoods, particularly in South Kensington attracts many French ex-patriots. The area contains the French Institute as well as the French secondary school, Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle. South Kensington also hosts some of the most impressive museums and landmarks in London, such as the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Kensington High-Street is the iconic shopping area within Kensington. The shops generally cater to a wealthier clientele, but regardless of price, they are great places to see the hottest trends or splurge on a designer piece. In the early 19th century, High-Street Kensington had three classic London department stores, Barkers, Derry & Toms, and Pontings. After the 1970's these stores slowly disappeared as House of Fraser bought Barkers and the other two stores closed. In any case, the street is perfect for a relaxed shopping experience with minimal crowds.

Kensington itself is the residence to the Kensington Palace and Kensington Gardens, which is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of tea and a scone with clotted cream. Since the 17th century, the palace has been the home to the British royal family. The Palace is best known for being the unofficial residence of Princess Diana and her family. The gardens are quite scenic with various intricate designs.

The general area of Kensington is perfect, whether you're looking for a nice, chic meal or as a comfortable and area to stay while visiting London.
