There is a reason why people have been going to Nice since the earliest of times (it is home to one of the oldest known human settlements in Europe) - it is simply idyllic. Capital of the French Riviera, it is also the fifth largest city in France. Nice is a place to relax and take in the sea air and to stroll down the palm tree lined Promenade des Anglais. Famous landmarks include Castle Hill, the Green Diamond tropical plant house in Phoenix Park, and the stunning Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas. The beautiful curving beachfront has a mix of private and public beaches that cater for all tastes and the views from Castle Hill are sublime. Nice is perfect for relaxing, dining out on some of the freshest food of the Mediterranean, sightseeing, shopping, and enjoying the arts.
When to visit Nice
The high season of June through August is when Nice is at its busiest and hottest. Low season is November through March when there are some great deals to take advantage of. The shoulder seasons (April/May and September/October) also offer many superb deals and plenty of warm sun. In summer: soak-up the rays, celebrate Bastille Day, see Phoenix Park in all its glory, and enjoy great dining along the prom. In winter: tour the museums and galleries, enjoy the Christmas market at Place Massena, or try some ice skating at the Palais des Sports Jean Bouin.
Getting to and around Nice
Nice Côte d'Azur International Airport is well served and close to the city itself. From the airport, use the frequent airport express busses (from Terminal 1 there is also a local bus service). European travellers can take advantage of international bus services or rail services via TGV from Paris. Taxis are generally best avoided in Nice but bus and tram services are good and reasonably priced. The Velo Bleu public bike hire scheme has pick-up/drop-off points across the city.
