Discover Prague

A visit to Prague allows you to step back in time. This ancient and romantic European city was the capital of Bohemia and the Holy Roman Empire and famous for being the historical, cultural and political hub of central Europe. Its cobbled streets have countless stories to tell from early trading days through to the 1989 Velvet Revolution. Today, much of the historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site attracting over 4 million visitors each year. The city oozes history from the Castle, the former seat of Czech kings; the famous Charles Bridge, built in 1375 and the oldest in Prague; the fourteenth century Town Hall with its Apostle's clock; the monumental St Vitus Cathedral containing the tombs of Bohemian kings; the atmospheric Jewish quarter where the New Old Synagogue is Central Europe's oldest, to the 1891 Petrin View Tower, a 60 m high Eiffel Tower replica. Prague is a cultural hot spot. The city of Kafka, Janacek, Dvorak and Smetena is renowned for its art, music, dance and theatre, both classical and contemporary. Yet Prague is certainly not staid! Hip, lively and youthful, it's renowned for its vibrant night life when the famed Prague beer accompanies the capital's unique 'pub grub' and clubs throb to the beat of jazz and blues, rock and reggae.

When to visit Prague

Prague has four seasons, with hot summers and cold, snowy winters. It offers year round interest. January hosts the winter opera, ballet and classical music Festival. Spring is heralded by St Matthew's Fair and the Easter Markets and March film festivals. May features the Beer Festival, a major Czech gastronomic event and an international music festival. Summer's highs include an international Puppet Festival and an Opera Gala. Autumn features the October Jazz Festival and November's St Martin's Festival. December to February is the Prague ball season. At year end, a packed city sparkles with its December Christmas market and New Year's Eve celebrations.

Getting to and around Prague

Prague International airport serves the city with taxi and bus links. The city centre is networked with buses, the three line Metro, trams and ferries. Travel passes are useful and economical for tourists.
