Margaret Island
Named after Princess Margit, daughter of King Bela IV, the tranquil green oasis within the city has served as Budapest’s playground since 1869.
Hi-lights include the Japanese garden at the northern end of the island. The garden has a wide variety of flowers, rock gardens and waterfalls. Also, not to be missed, especially in the summer is Palatinus Strand, the city’s largest outdoor pool complex. Visitors flock to the pools from dusk ‘til dawn to enjoy the therapeutic thermal waters pumped in form the city’s thermal springs.
For a luxurious overview of the entire island take a horse-drawn carriage ride. Carriages can be taken from opposite the hotels at the northern end of the island and tours last about an hour.
The most enjoyable way to reach the island is by boat, although buses run there too. Boats run from Vigado ter, more frequently in summer. A trip to Margaret Island is a perfect way to spend a traffic-free day within this magnificent city. Many of Loving Budapest Apartments are conveniently located near Margaret Island and offer visitors a flexible, self-catering alternative for accommodation in Budapest.
