Buda Castle

The Historic Focal Point of Budapest

Elevated in Budapest, the Royal Castle was built between 1247 and 1265, during the reign of King Bela IV. Surrounding the grand complex is Castle District, boasting an abundance of historic public buildings, churches and charming houses, famously known for their Medieval Baroque.

For centuries, the castle had an impressive history of being demolished and rebuilt, reinventing its grand structure over time. The reign of King Sigismund Luxembourg introduced a gothic elegance which Budapest became well known for. During the 15th century and the reign of King Matthias Corvinus, the final pieces of the structure were built introducing the first touch of Italian Renaissance. In 1541, Budapest was invaded by the Turks who seized power until 1686 and during this period Castle District and the Royal Castle were again, reduced to ruins.

During the reign of King Charles III of Halsberg, between 1714 and 1723, the castle was restored, representing the Baroque style it is so famously known for today. During the Hungarian revolution, Buda Castle was destroyed again by the great fire of 1810. Following Hungary’s triumph of independence, the castle was restored to glory between 1875 and 1912, representing the peace between governance and society.

A guided tour through Buda Castle is well worth a trip to appreciate the breath-taking architecture, and surrounding grounds, and to appreciate the extensive history behind this beautiful landmark. Located in the heart of the city, many of our Budapest apartments are only a stones-throw away.
