The Picasso Museum

An Extensive Collection of Picasso's Works from Boy to Man

The Picasso Museum (Museu Picasso) is one of Barcelona’s most popular museums for visitors staying in Barcelona holiday apartments. Home to one of the largest collections of works by Pablo Picasso, the museum is one of the city’s must-see destinations. When renting Barcelona holiday apartments, you will find yourself surrounded by art and culture, and the Picasso Museum is certainly one of the city’s prime examples.

The museum opened in 1963 with an already impressive collection. Picasso’s lifelong friend, Jaume Sabartes (to whom Picasso had given many paintings), donated 574 works while the city of Barcelona provided further items. More paintings were donated to the museum by collectors and other friends of the great artist. Picasso later donated additional items in the late 1960s, further contributing to the museum’s already impressive collection.

Today, over 3,500 works can be found in the Picasso Museum. For Picasso admirers looking to rent apartments in Barcelona, this museum is a true treasure trove. Picasso’s works are arranged in chronological order from his early days to his final creations. Being able to see the development of the artist in this way adds another element to the museum and gives a greater insight into the artist’s progression. The museum also clearly shows Picasso’s connection with the city of Barcelona.

The museum is located in Barcelona’s La Ribera area (Montcada, 15-23) in the Ciutat Vella (the Old City). The metro is often the best way to get around in the city when you rent Barcelona holiday apartments. To get to the museum take Line 1, 3 or 4 to the Arc de Triomf, Liceu or Jaume I stations respectively (the museum will then be only a short walk away). Plenty of buses also stop nearby, including lines 17, 19, 39, 45 and 51. The museum does not have its own car park, making public transport a better option.

The museum is closed on Mondays but opens from 10.00am to 8.00pm from Tuesday through to Sunday. Admission costs €9 or €5.80 if wanting to see one of the temporary exhibitions only. For more information (including details of forthcoming temporary exhibitions and seminars) have a look at the official Picasso Museum website: www.bcn.cat/museupicasso. If you are an art lover looking to rent Barcelona holiday apartments, be sure to visit this fantastic museum during your stay.
