Boqueria Market

An Abundance of Wonderful Smells and Gorgeous Food

The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, known generally as La Boqueria, is one of Barcelona’s largest public markets. It's a great destination to visit from our holiday rentals. Barcelona has a fine selection of local foods, all of which can be found in this vibrant market. Fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and seafood can all be found in abundance, as well as a great selection of tapas bars.

Incredibly, La Boqueria began its life as a commercial site back in 1217, with a few stalls selling meat near the old city gate providing its humble beginnings. In the late 15th century a pig market began trading at the same location (then known as the Mercat Bornet). The market remained unenclosed for much of its life until construction began on a new market, the inauguration of which was finally held in 1853. A fish market was later opened in 1911, by which time La Boqueria had become a thriving Catalan market.

Today, the Boqueria Market is a hugely popular tourist attraction. An incredible selection of products can be seen here when visiting from our holiday rentals. Barcelona is blessed with delicious Mediterranean products, and many of them end up in the Boqueria. The seafood on sale is excellent, a huge variety of fresh fruit and vegetables can be found, and the well priced tapas bars are perfect for a quick snack.

Just walking around the market is an experience in itself; the bustling crowds, the animated market workers and all the smells, sounds and colours of the market combine to make an unforgettable experience. When staying in the best holiday rentals Barcelona has to offer, a trip to the Boqueria is a great way to stock up on supplies.

The market is located in the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona; the entrance can be found on La Rambla, not too far from the Liceu opera house. It’s easy to reach the market from all of our holiday rentals. Barcelona buses stop off at La Boqueria (lines 14, 59 and 91), or take the metro to the Liceu station (L3) and walk from there.

The Boqueria market is open every day (except Sundays) from 8.00am to 8:30pm. The best time to visit depends on what you are looking for. Shopping is easier on weekdays because the crowds are not so big, but if you are looking for atmosphere then Saturday is the best time to go. Set out early from our holiday rentals: Barcelona has plenty of fresh produce and the earlier you arrive the fresher it will be!
