Passeig de Gracia

The Elegant Boulevard of Fine Shops and Restaurants

The Passeig de Gracia is one of the showpiece avenues of Barcelona. Not only is it a major business area, the street is also one of the city’s most popular shopping areas. Some of the best examples of Barcelona architecture can also be found along the street, making the Passeig de Gracia an attractive destination for anyone staying in our Barcelona apartments.

The street, formerly known as Cami de Jesus (Jesus Road) was once little more than a country lane running between Barcelona and Gracia (which was then a separate town). New urbanisation projects during the 1800s slowly began to transform the road; by 1827 the avenue was 42 metres wide and soon became a popular place for the aristocracy to ride their horses. By 1906 the street had become one of the most fashionable thoroughfares in the city. New buildings sprang up, many of which were designed by famous architects such as Antoni Gaudi.

The Passeig de Gracia is still as fashionable today as it was 100 years ago. If looking to do some shopping (of the designer nature) from our Barcelona apartments then this is the place to go. Gucci, Chanel, Armani, Cartier, Lacoste and pretty much any other designer label you can think of can be found along the avenue.

The Passeig de Gracia, with its wide boulevards and opulent surroundings, is a fine place to go for a stroll and take in the Barcelona atmosphere. For lovers of architecture staying in our Barcelona apartments, there are plenty of fine buildings to be seen.

Two of Antoni Gaudi’s greatest creations can be found along the avenue: La Pedrera (Casa Mila) and Casa Batlló. They are both spectacular buildings and are open to the public. Numerous other examples of Barcelona architecture can be seen along the street including creations by Enric Sagnier and Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

The Passeig de Gracia stretches from Placa Catalunya to Carrer Gran de Gracia in the central part of the Eixample district. To visit the avenue from any of our Barcelona apartments, take the metro (Line 3, 4 or 5) and hop out at either the Passeig de Gracia or Diagonal station. Alternatively, take one of many buses that head to the avenue or, if travelling by train, head for the Passeig de Gracia railway station.

The avenue is a lively destination both day and night. Whether looking to shop or take in a few cultural sights, the Passeig de Gracia is a great place to visit when staying in our Barcelona apartments.
